چکیده

Large Eddy Simulations are performed in a T-junction to analyze the feasibility of wallfunctions in accurately predicting the thermal fluctuations acting on the pipe walls. The WALE sub-grid-scale model employed in the LES solver is validated by performing OECD/NEA T-Junction benchmark test-case. In order to reduce the computational costs, Reynolds number scaling is performed while preserving the essential flow features. While the wall-function based simulation showed good agreement with the wall-resolved approach for the bulk velocity and temperature field, the corresponding RMS components were consistently under-estimated close to the wall boundaries. The same was true for the RMS fluctuations of the wall heat-flux. As a consequence, it is concluded that any similarity in the bulk profiles does not guarantee any kind of similarity in the wall heat flux behavior.

A coupled CFD-FEM strategy to predict thermal fatigue in mixing tees of nuclear reactors

Fluctuating stresses imposed on a piping system are potential causes of thermal fatigue failures in energy cooling systems of nuclear power plants [4]. These stresses are generated due to temperature fluctuations in regions where cold and hot flows are intensively mixed together. A typical situation for such mixing appears in turbulent flow through a T-junction. In the present work, turbulent m...

Numerical Study of Reynolds Number Effects on Flow over a Wall-Mounted Cube in a Channel Using LES

Turbulent flow over wall-mounted cube in a channel was investigated numerically using Large Eddy Simulation. The Selective Structure Function model was used to determine eddy viscosity that appeared in the subgrid scale stress terms in momentum equations. Studies were carried out for the flows with Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 40000. To evaluate the computational results, data was compa...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

Wall-layer Models for Large-eddy Simulations

■ Abstract Because the cost of large-eddy simulations (LES) of wall-bounded flows that resolve all the important eddies depends strongly on the Reynolds number, methods to bypass the wall layer are required to perform high-Reynolds-number LES at a reasonable cost. In this paper the available methodologies are reviewed, and their ranges of applicability are highlighted. Various unresolved issues...

A dynamic stochastic forcing method as a wall-layer model for large-eddy simulation

Turbulence-resolving simulations of wall-bounded flows at high Reynolds numbers are presently unattainable due to the need to resolve fully the energy-carrying eddies in the near-wall region. Hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes/large-eddy simulations (RANS/LES), in which the nearwall eddies are modelled in a Reynolds-averaged sense, provide a cost-saving alternative. However previous attempt...
